bash-3.00# passwd -sa | egrep 'anu1|root'
root PS
anu1 PS 12/21/10 14 56 15

It means that root's password never expires since it doesn't have any expiry rule. anu1's password was last changed 12/21/10 and needs be changed 56 days after 12/21/10, and you will be warned 15 days before it expires

also check MAXWEEKS parameter in /etc/default/passwd
