try to 1st uncompress the file using

bunzip2 <filename.tar.bz2>
than you can extract the files from tar

tar -xvf ...

if you are new and starting for the 1st time than I would suggest that you 1st first start from Linux as there is a lot more material (explained in a very student friendly way) available on the web...

Why are you trying to install the opensolaris stuff ? just go to the Java download page and you should be able to download package for Solaris 10 which can be installed by pkgadd

I assume that the system would have SSH installed, if yes then you can use SFTP to access and copy the files
SFTP is basically FTP over SSH and works well in situations when you don't have FTP...
