Default fd of a process showing sudden increase in count

Dear All,
One of my processes suddeny started reporting errors when trying to open new files and when i checked the fd directory in /proc/<pid>/fd, i could find lots of file descriptors.I observed that around 1300 fd were created at the same time and all were of the format
---------- 1 root root 336 Aug 21 11:54 <fd number>.
I feel this is something abnormal. Any help or clue in this regard would be helpful
